Fabio Gigone

Fabio Gigone (he/him) is an educator, architect, and researcher. He holds a degree in Architecture from Università IUAV di Venezia and has been a licensed architect since 2007 (Ordine Architetti Udine / RIBA Part 3 equivalent). He co-founded Salottobuono, a collaborative platform for design and research, active until 2012. During this period, he served as editor of the “Instructions and Manuals” section of Abitare magazine (2007–2010) and as Creative Director of Domus magazine (2011–2012). He co-authored Manual of Decolonization (Milano: A+M bookstore Edizioni, 2010) and contributed to multiple editions of La Biennale di Venezia – Architettura and Arte (2008, 2011, 2012, 2014). In 2010, he was Art Director and Designer of the Italian Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia. That same year, he co-founded San Rocco Magazine with a multidisciplinary team of architects and photographers. In parallel with his professional practice, Gigone has held various academic positions: Adjunct Professor at Università IUAV di Venezia (Summer Workshops, 2009–2010); Lecturer at ISIA Urbino – Higher Institute for Artistic Industries (2009–2012); Associate Professor at NMBU, Department of Landscape and Spatial Planning, Norway (2015–2018); and Research Assistant at Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark (2015–2018). In 2018, he completed advanced studies in Renaissance and Early Modern culture at the Warburg Institute, London. His research focuses on Architectural History and Theory, with a particular emphasis on Early Modern architecture and art in Europe. His interests include the historical concepts of privacy and immunity, as well as diplomacy and medicalisation in Italy and France between the 15th and 17th centuries. Gigone earned his Ph.D. in History and Theory of Architecture at The Royal Danish Academy (2018–2022), affiliated with the Danish National Research Foundation Centre for Privacy Studies at the University of Copenhagen. His dissertation, States of Proximity: Privacy under Louis XIV in Versailles, was supervised by Prof. Peter Thule Kristensen and Prof. Maarten Delbeke (ETH Zürich), and assessed by Prof. Mari Hvattum (AHO Oslo), Prof. Maria Fabricius Hansen (University of Copenhagen), and Prof. Kirsten Marie Raahauge (The Royal Danish Academy). He has been a resident at the Accademia di Danimarca – Det Danske Institut i Rom (2019, 2021, 2023), conducting archival research at the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano. In Spring 2020, he was an Academic Guest at the Institut für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur at ETH Zürich. Currently, Gigone is a Carlsberg Internationalisation Postdoctoral Fellow at ETH Zürich (gta – Chair of the History and Theory of Architecture, Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke), Det Danske Institut i Rom, and the Centre for Privacy Studies (University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Theology). His postdoctoral project, The Architecture of Immunity: Planning, Building, and Reclaiming Baroque Rome (1656–1668), investigates the urban transformations linked to the paradigm of immunity in 17th-century Rome. He also serves as External Lecturer and Research Faculty at DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia, within the Architecture and Design Department in Copenhagen (since 2021).
